Wynn Macau Closes Tryst Nightclub

Posted by Hunter

An interesting tidbit in today's RJ indicates that Wynn Macau has closed it's Tryst nightclub. A sister to the popular venue in Las Vegas, Tryst Macau was smaller and had been deemed as an experiment of sorts.

Well - I guess the experiment failed as the space is being converted into private gaming.

This just makes me feel right in my prediction that Cotai will struggle to make a big profit. I'm sure it'll be able to pay for itself, LVS will make sure of it, but the vision behind it that Macau-goers want all the dining, attractions, and entertainment you can find on the Strip is misguided.

Sheldy will carve out an expanded convention audience and have enough things going on at his property to keep the convention guests happy while they're there. But the gamblers aren't looking for anything more than the gambling hall format already established.

That's why I was surprised to hear that fashion tv is opening a fashion bar in Macau. At $250,000 per year, minimum 2-years advance plus fit-out surely a hefty outlay!

Also Wynn Macau did close a couple of their retail outlets, but not sure if this has to do with the construction works.

Anyway, Crown Macau has started testing their systems and are opening to the public on May 9 followed by a official opening on May 12.

And last but least here are some more latest construction pictures by heisnt on => http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=12916454#post12916454i

Enjoy!

I think that it may be too soon for this type of venue, but I do think over time that there will be a big market in China for this type of entertainment. Right now Macau is a gamblers only destination. However, if the govt doesnt muck it up, I see the very large number of wealthy chinese that are being created by their strong economy looking for a place like Macau for more than just gaming. It may take 10-15 years to see it become a reality, but I think it will definitely happen.

There may be a demand for nightlife, but why go to a casino town to get it?

This whole "let's go to Vegas and party until the sun comes up" thing doesn't really exist in that culture. If you look at the largest Asian cultures, the nightlife and the gambling are kept pretty separate and don't draw the same clientele. At least this is the case in all the research I've looked at and until someone who knows more than I do wants to prove me wrong it's what I believe.

The recent + abrupt closure of TRYST nightclub located within Wynn Macau has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the fact that the nightclub venue there cannot succeed nor support itself because of so-called "cultural" differences between Chinese + American gambling habits. Both operators of TRYST, who happen to be twin brothers, Cy + Jesse Waits, who manage TRYST @ WLV + until recently TRYST @ Wynn Macau, have been involved in, shall we say, "legal + alleged unlawful" scrutiny by local authorities in their Macau nightclub operation at Wynn Macau. That is all that I am willing to offer at this point, the rest will become a matter of record in due time. Gee, Steve, let's throw more multiple millions of dollars away on another failed venue! One word people, when it comes to Macau, the Ho family dynasty + the four decades of TRIAD influence will continue for a long time. I have to commend MGM/MIRAGE for having obtained a joint-venture approval partnership from the NGC in connection with Pansy Ho, Stanley's daughter - this has to be the business coup of the century as far as [their] stake in Macau is concerned. Stupid Wynn lost his BEST chance at brining in the "whales" + major players when Binion BAILED at the very start! Note to Steve: you are running out of luck buddy, it's now time to voluntarily commit/retire yourself to the the "Helen Keller Hospice for the Blind + Stupid" LOL

Baloney, a large reason the concessions were handed out is because the government wanted to expand past Ho and what he was doing, because that wasn't going to make them as much money.

I am certain that someone will make it work without getting "permission" from this guy who is a modern-day Godfather if you are to be believed. If Wynn can't figure it out, LV Sands will.

PS: You might want to take a second look at what you're saying. If you are suggesting that MGM Grand is going to be spared triad intervention because of Pansy Ho then you are making implications that MGM-MIRAGE struck a business deal with organized crime. That's the kind of statement that they would not be happy to see.

mike_ch: I NEVER suggested, nor implied, that MGM/MIRAGE "struck a deal with organized crime" in Macau. Do your research, despite Pansy Ho's previous business conflicts with her father, it is a matter of record that her father has, + will continue, to provide any + all financial backing for, not only her, but other Ho siblings as well who are also partnering with Western gaming operators in Macau. Draw your own conclusion, however, there is NO DENYING the fact that Stanley Ho is the "ghost" impetus for his daughter's ability to finance such a large obligation such as this on her own. You are 100% wrong on this one, however, whether Pansy Ho's testimony, whereby she received a privileged gaming license in order to parther with MGM/MIRAGE, by her own admission, has nothing to do with her past or current relationship with her father is simply untrue. That would suggest that the two of them are completely estranged from one another, check the record, that is hardly the case. You need to do more thorough research before posting comments in the future!

I realize that this might be slightly off-topic, but WYNN related nonetheless. I was just informed that Wynn Resorts, Ltd. Earnings Conference Call for Q1 2007 has officially been scheduled for Monday, May 7th @ 4:30 PM, Eastern. I just wanted to give you Wynn fanboys a heads-up. Cross your fingers that WYNN will report a substantial profit (primarily from their Macau property) for the first time in almost TWO YEARS!

Yes, this schedule was on the wires things morning.

I just came back, and was suprised by Tryst closing as well so abrubtly. It's current reincarnation was only about 3 months long.

For what it's worth, what I was told from on local was the club was closed because after the novelity wore off, it became a HUGE gweilo (white guy) sausage party, and ultimately out came the hookers in force. Added to this mix was rather abusive drunks and some drug dealing. In the end the whole thing just got to be more of a hassle with the authorites and a potential embarassment for Wynn then was to put up with.

"An investigation by New Jersey regulators into MGM Mirage's business dealings in Macau could result in the gambling behemoth's exit from Atlantic City, an analyst said yesterday.
In a note to investors, UBS analyst Robin Farley said she believes the Division of Gaming Enforcement, which has been conducting an investigation into MGM's Macau partnership for the past year and a half, may raise concerns about the company's partner, Pansy Ho, the daughter of Asian gambling tycoon Stanley Ho."

detroit: I think MGM/MIRAGE already got the Pansy Ho "thumbs up" + suitability for licensure in the gaming markets that really matter to them on a long-term basis, exactly what they needed. New Jersey has always scrutinized operators' suitability for a privileged gaming license with greater circumspect than Nevada. Considering that MGM/MIRAGE is already operating as a joint-venture partner with Boyd (Borgata), + the fact that MGM/MIRAGE now have several newly added 'strategic partners', it will not impact their future plans there in the least if Pansy Ho is ultimately denied. Considering the amount of valuable undeveloped land MGM/MIRAGE still owns in Atlantic City, this is a no brainer. If you care to recall, HRH Steve Wynn himself had trouble obtaining a permanent gaming license in New Jersey for the Golden Nugget, Atlantic City back in 1980 which ultimately lead to [his] abandoning Atlantic City altogether.

More disturbing is the violent May Day clashes Macau has had. There is an underlying current by the locals and it's a sign that all is not that well.

Plus now because of the huge influx of gamblers the numbers of triads(read money attracts loan sharks and pimps) has increased to levels never seen before.

Yes Tryst had problems with the powers to be, especially when it became a hookers pick-up joint. They had to attract the crowd somehow! But hey I am sure you have many of those joints in Vegas too!

On the Pansy Ho saga, you can say what you like, like her brother Lawrence Ho who is opening Crown Macau with James Packer they are all Stanley ho siblings. What that means in Chinese families that he is the Big Brother, in other words he has got a big say, what he says will happen in the family.

MGM Mirage purely was a politically motivated decision.

My 2 cents worth!
