There's one thing I'm curious about Macau, which is how do you get there besides in a car from the mainland or ferry from Hong Kong?

The airport is not a major hub. Are there plans to expand it? What's the timetable for that?

Good question.

I've been checking flights from LAX because I really want to see Wynn Macau and everything seems to go through Taipei or Hong Kong. The airport is a regional one it seems.

Macau airport ain't big and the only flights at the moment are either (i) regional or (ii) private jets like those that Sheldon and Steve fly in on. The number of flights is expanding but the main business of Macau airport is still as a transit stop for Taiwanese heading to the mainland (because there are no direct flights from Taiwan to the mainland). Very few Macau visitors to Macau arrive by plane. They are working on some kind of expansion but not exactly sure what that will involve. I dare say for the short to medium term most visitors from places like the US will still need to fly via Taipei or HK. I think unfortunately the infrastructure in Macau is going to lag behind the casinos/resorts which is going to create some traffic/transport issues for a few years until things catch up.

In any event, there are ferries direct from HK airport to Macau and on a clear day you can see Macau from HK, so its not particularly far. If you are flying in to HK airport in the evening from the south/south west you can see the casinos of Macau very clearly. In fact, there may be air traffic control issues with HK and Macau airports being so close (not to mention Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou airports).
